Camper Kit or Backyard Pod

The Tail Feather DIY Camper Kit assembles on an 8x5 trailer, and is light enough to be towed by most four cylinder cars, most notably the Toyota Corolla (will require a braked trailer).

A Kit and trailer combination will have a tare weight of approximately 500kg (depending on the specifications of the trailer you choose).

The ball weight of the combination is roughly 10% of the Gross Vehicle Mass which in most instances shouldn't be more than 750kg for an unbraked trailer (when fully loaded).

If you select a trailer with brakes, this will increase safety, and will permit more vehicles to tow the combination.

Suitable Trailer

The Tail Feather has a ball weight of just 50kg, being the mass transferred by the camper onto the rear of your towing vehicle.

When determining whether your small or medium car is capable of towing a Tail Feather refer to your vehicle's handbook.

1. Ball Weight (needs to be greater than 50 kg)
2. GVM (Gross Vehicle Mass) of a braked trailer (needs to be greater than 700kg (allows for up to 200 kg of equipment, even more if you have a Corolla)

Please note: Some medium, and most large vehicles can tow a Tail Feather Camper that is not fitted with brakes. Most small vehicles however, will require a braked Tail Feather Camper.

Suitable Tow Vehicle

The Toyota Corolla is a good example of a suitable tow vehicle. It has a "ball weight" rating of 130kg, and can tow a braked trailer with a Gross Vehicle Mass of up to 1300kg. However, most similar sized vehicles have a GVM and "ball weight" rating much less than the Corolla, so it's important to refer to your vehicle's handbook for towing specifications. 

Please note: Some medium, and most large vehicles can tow an unbraked trailer up to 750kg. Most small vehicles however, will require a braked trailer as their unbraked rating is generally less than 400kg.
